To those that are followers of our dogs, I am sure that at some point during the last two months you might of read about Marvelous Marv. He was rescued by FPALR back in September and as most rescue dogs came in very thin.
He was adopted after his two weekincubation period and returned the next day due to allergies with the new owner’s wife. This was very hard on this fella, and he became extremely depressed and stopped eating. Blood tests were done with no answers given so one of the foster homes offered to take him in to give him some one on one attention and the love he so needed. He thrived with his two foster canine siblings and the feline ones as well, considered by his foster Mom as "the best of the best foster" who went with the flow in the house. He even wore the costume for Halloween although not happy about it. However during this time another issue came up with him.
Being in a foster home it was discovered that Marv had definite vision issues in his right eye. He was immediately taken to The Canine Eye Clinic in Elgin where he diagnosed being totally blind in his right eye, however after further testing his left eye was normal.
Marv was making great strides in his environment yet needed that one place to call home permanent. Another attempt at an adoption was not successful as the adopter’s male dog did not like the intrusion. Marv returned to his former foster where it was known to all, he would always have a permanent place there if that is what was meant to be.
A few weeks later another interest in him came thru. A great couple with a cat was interested in him. The visit went well everything checked out and Marv had a home of his own. It didn’t matter to them that he was blind in one eye or had knobby front knees, he was there boy whom they called Cooper.
Recently Cooper fell ill. Once again blood tests were run with no conclusions, it wasn’t til a urinalysis was done that an answer was found. He has been diagnosed with Blastomycosis. This is contracted from a fungus that can be breathed in through dirt and soil. It is a very rare disease and its only with the great Vets in Chicago that his owners took him to was it diagnosed. This is something that apparently Cooper came in with from the High Kill Shelter that he was rescued from. It wasn’t the Christmas Holiday that Cooper’s owners had planned on having with their new best friend. Instead it was one of prayers, hope and sadness as they watched this Marvelous Fellow struggle to make it. As of right now he is home with a long road to recovery. His current medical bills are over $5000.00
A note from his Mom
"He'll be on anti-fungal medication for at least another 6 months, and will need periodic urine tests to check the levels of the fungus in his body. We feel really lucky to have great vets near us here in Chicago and a really sweet puppy that everyone falls in love with. I attached a picture of him right after he got home from the hospital yesterday. They shaved parts of his head (he had swelling that needed to be drained), but I managed to avoid that in the picture. All you can see is the bandage from where one of his IVs was."
Please keep Cooper and his family in your thoughts, we will keep you updated as we get information about this great guy. If you are at one of our adoption events and if it’s at all possible, please slip a dollar into the donation jar or your spare changed with a note that says Cooper. All monies collected for him will be sent to Abby and Greg who are giving Cooper all the love he needs.
